Healthy Homes Standards
The Healthy Homes Standards are minimum legal requirements for NZ rental properties covering heating, insulation, ventilation, moisture and drainage, and draught stopping. All private rentals had to comply by 1 July 2025.
Landlords must meet specific measurable standards — e.g. a fixed heater capable of heating the main living room to 18°C, ceiling and underfloor insulation, extractor fans in kitchens and bathrooms. Non-compliance carries financial penalties and Tenancy Tribunal exposure. Budget compliance costs into any purchase of an older rental.
